Introduction to Somerset
The county of Somerset is in the south west of England. Gloucestershire is on its north border, to the east is Wiltshire and southerly is Dorset and finally Devon borders Somerset to its south west.
Somerset is over 1,600 square miles and over 1.2m people live there. There is a thriving tourism industry in Somerset helped by some wonderful historic sites, countryside and sandy beaches. There are many caves in Somerset and probably the most famous is ‘Cheddar Gorge & Caves’.
Cheddar Gorge is a ravine cut through the Mendip hills by fast flowing underwater waterways. Cheddar is also famous for the popular Cheddar Cheese which originates from here.
Music lovers will be familiar with one of England’s key music events. Glastonbury is the location of this music festival. Taunton is the county town of Somerset.
